ask catherine

Clearly I have no photoshop skills

Happy Sunday! Welcome to the pilot episode of Ask Catherine. (And can we take a moment to forgive me for that terrible photo editing?) While I love talking about outfits and fashion trends, sometimes I like to get a little personal too. I’m super excited about this series, but also a little nervous that no one is going to ask me anything. Please have pity on a blogger trying something different and SEND ME your questions!

How did you meet your boyfriend?

HA! One of my favorite stories. I was at a downtown block party last July with one group of friendsĀ  and ended up ditching them to hang out with another group (sorry, Peen). I had gone to high school with one of the girls in that group, Mary, and hadn’t talked to her in years. After the party, my friends and I ended up in a bar, and Brian eventually walked up to our table. He had long hair and a beer in each hand. One of his best friends is Mary’s younger brother, and he had come to hang out with them – and as it turns out, met me for the first time even though we had gone to high school and college together. Crazy, I know – and also random, because I NEVER go out. I’m glad I did that night, though.

We have been pretty much inseparable ever since. My friends (and family) were all very concerned I was moving way too fast, but once they met him, they understood. When it’s right, it’s right. He’s pretty much amazing. I could go on and on but on the (very) off chance my brother reads this, I don’t want to make him too nauseous. ;)

What are some style trends that really baffle or scare you (and why), and would you ever be brave enough to try them?

Not that it’s a trend, but I do not wear fur for personal reasons. Same goes for reptile skins. Not that I can afford either of these, but I refuse to ever wear them. Especially fur.

One trend that DOES scare me is peplum. I think it’s deceptively flattering, but every time I’ve tried on a peplum piece, it’s made my torso look squat and my boobs look bigger – two things I really don’t need done to my body. I can’t quite break away from peplum completely, though. If any curvy girl has tried a peplum piece that’s flattering, please let me know!

Thanks so much to my readers for submitting questions – and please let me know if you like this series. I’m always open to feedback, especially when trying something new.

  1. I love this series! I will have to come up with questions to ask you now. One of my favorite things is hearing other people’s love stories. I am definitely a romantic and it makes me happy when people find love. :)

I can’t pull off peplum, either. So I am right there with you!

Aww, I love sharing my (our) story – honestly, I could have written pages on it. I’d LOVE to answer your question(s)!!

  2. Love how you spared Jack up there haha And you and Brian are so cute together so it’s only fitting that you have a cute story for how you first met :)

As for peplum….you won’t believe it but my mom got a peplum dress for my wedding! And it looked really cute on her! You’ll have to check it out and give your fashionista opinion on shoes and accessories!

  3. I love your answer to this question!

Catherine, I just love your blog!! I happen to be a curvy girl and I just bought my first peplum and I love it. It’s a faux leather version (I too will not wear fur/leather/animal skins of any type) and it was a steal from Forever 21+. I was also inspired by you to purchase my first bright pink blazer (like the one in your picture). I got it for just $24 at JCPenneys. Love it also. Thanks for your blog and all the inspiration.

Thank you so much, Jennifer!! I have heard so many recommendations for JC Penney – I’m going to try and find that top! Thank you SO much for reading!!

  5. Oh my gosh, I hate peplum. I haven’t tried on a single peplum top that I like either. I too have a larger chest so maybe that’s the problem. I’d also be keen to know of any ladies with larger upper halves have round a peplum that works!
