I fell in love last summer – with one-piece swimsuits.

I was at my second-favorite place in the world, Sanibel Island, with my family and four bikinis, feeling a little uncomfortable with my body. Then I remembered I had packed a brand new one-piece swimsuit from J. Crew that I managed to score for $25. I hadn’t worn a one-piece in YEARS – but I decided to try wearing that one for the day.

The result? I LOVED it. And more importantly, I loved myself in it! When my mom and sister-in-law and I went shopping later that afternoon, I shelled out for another bright red one-piece at the swimsuit store on the island and wore that to the beach the next day. I haven’t felt confident at the beach since before I knew what it meant to be confident, and that day I strutted my stuff in my red swimsuit, feeling more fabulous than I thought possible.

I felt amazing on the beach, something I seriously thought would never happen. Sadly, it’s almost a universal truth for people women (myself included) to not always feel best in a swimsuit. We’re literally exposed, our bodies basically out for everyone to see. It’s an uncomfortable feeling for even the most confident of us. I honestly thought of one-pieces as frumpy and unflattering, and I found them to be the exact opposite. If you’re dreading shopping for a swimsuit this summer, why not try a one-piece? I promise you’ll look (and feel) fabulous.

  1. Oh my, I love these all! I bought a one-piece swimsuit last year and I wore it almost exclusively. I’m really loving that last red one!

  2. I discovered the fun of 1-pieces a few summers ago too and I love them! Plus, I would rather find a strapless style and avoid accidental tan lines than get a sunburn on my stomach! I’ll have to look into these styles – it’s time to get a new suit, I think!

Catherine, I would LOVE to see your pictures in those beautiful new swimsuits! I have been wearing one pieces for quite a few years now, and my favorite one is a leaopard print I purchased from Forever 21 for just 25 bucks!! I live in Florida (a few miles from the beach) and swim suits are a large portion of my wardrobe. I shop everywhere for them because around here you can never have too many!

Interesting side note on the psychology of swimwear. When a man sees a woman in a one piece swimming suit the part of his brain that feels sympathy and recognizes another human being lights up in response. When he sees a woman in a bikini the part of the brain that recognizes a tool, to be used, lights up.

I did know that, actually! I just love it that I feel confident on the beach in these suits!

  5. I love all these! I only wear one-pieces now (although I’d love to go back to bikinis eventually… we’ll see), but it is so hard to find one that fits! I have a short torso, but it’s not exactly small, so I either have to get one that is too long but fits across my stomach/etc or one that is the right length but very tight. I can make it work, depending on the style/print/ruching/straps/etc, but it’s still a whole new level of bathing suit-shopping annoyance I never had to deal with before! I even have that problem with lap-swimming bathing suits (like Speedo or TYR or whatever). The bathing suit may fit, but the straps are always too long. Of course, I’m sure people with long torsos have the opposite problem!
