outfit of the day: (not a) mom on the go + whatever works wednesday

An easy outfit for moms on the go: a cardigan, blouse and chinos

pants, J. Crew (same style, but different colors) • shoes, J. Crew Factory

I am not a mom (though all my friends will agree that I am BABY CRAZY), so I always feel weird talking about outfits for busy moms on the go.

But if I had to pick an outfit for a mom, this would be it: a button-up, cardigan and jeans (or chinos if you need to be slightly dressy). At least this is how I picture myself dressing as a mom – with my perfect, dirt-free children in tow. While wearing Crewcuts.

(Because why not add that to the fantasy?)

Honestly, even though I’m not a mom, this would be the kind of outfit I’d pick. It’s matchy without being stuffy, can be easily dressed up or down, includes pieces that can be worn multiple ways with multiple outfits (thus stretching a budget) and can be pulled together quickly during a busy morning. Flats are comfortable and perfect for running after an errant child. And every piece (minus the shoes) is machine-washable. Because it doesn’t take a mom to know that the dry cleaners is a PAIN.

outfit of the day: barbie shoes

Blouse, Talbots • sweatshirt, Gap • pants, J. Crew • heels, J. Crew Factory

I loved Barbie when I was growing up. I still remember walking running to the Barbie aisle at Target and giggling with glee at the beautiful Barbie dolls in their shiny pink boxes. I had a pink Barbie dreamhouse and a Barbie convertible that I played with everyday, and I even celebrated several Barbie weddings, complete with photos that I insisted on getting developed. I still lament the fact that all my childhood Barbies got lost when my mom’s house flooded a few years ago. (As if my future daughters would appreciate playing with tangled-hair, mismatched-clothed Barbies.) So when my mom proclaimed the pair of shoes my sister-in-law found for me (on sale!) as “Barbie shoes,” I didn’t even have to try them on. They were beloved from first slightly-wobbly step.

Just a reminder: tomorrow is Whatever Works Wednesday! Come bring your links and join the (link-up) party!

Not loving how tired I look. This is what happens when you try to take outfit pics during lunch and find out that your camera battery is dead, so you have to wait until after work.

That’s a complaint worthy of #bloggerproblems, if I ever heard one.

outfit of the day: loud and proud + WWW

Ann Taylor floral jeans and aqua heels with a blue blazer

Blazer, Luii via Stitchfix • pants, Ann Taylor (on sale!) • shell, Banana Republic • shoes, Ann Taylor

The moment I saw these pants on Ann Taylor’s site, I knew I had to have them. And then I noticed the aqua heels, and it was over. It might be only 35 today, but I am wearing spring and feeling great. I am obsessed with this outfit. OBSESSED. I originally ordered the pants in my normal size and had to return them for a size up – kind of a bummer, but (so I told myself) what’s more important – the number on the pants or how they fit me? And come on – how can you not wear beautiful floral pants and not be happy?

This is a loud outfit even for me, but I feel amazing in it. And sometimes that’s what matters.

outfit of the day: I don’t like my outfit + a giveaway!

Lilac jeans and a leopard coat work with boots for winter or fall.

Lilac jeans and a leopard coat work with boots for winter or fall.

Coat, Old Navy • sweater, J. Crew • pants, Ann Taylor • boots, Talbots

I did not like my outfit yesterday. I just wasn’t feeling it. I am so over winter that I tried to make spring jeans work for the cold, but I don’t know. It wasn’t my favorite. The leopard coat helped. Do you just ever have days when you and your outfit don’t get along for no particular reason? I’m going to blame the fact that it was Monday. And also LAST YEAR at this time, it was 80 degrees. It’s enough to make me weep.

But you know what makes me feel better? A giveaway with some of my favorite bloggers! Thanks so much to Sharon with The Tiny Heart for organizing this giveaway! What would you do with $50?

outfit of the day: i love this outfit + meet my sponsor

BB Dakota aztec sweater with a pencil skirt

BB Dakota aztec sweater with a pencil skirt

Sweater, BB Dakota (on sale!) • belt and skirt, Talbots • tights, Target • boots, Shoemint

I don’t expect to love my outfit every day. Sure, I try and pick out something that I like, something that makes me feel happy. But every now and then I have those magical days where I LOVE my outfit. I love how it makes me feel, I love how it looks and I am just so happy all day. Today’s outfit is one of those. I found a totally different way to wear this sweater, and I think it belts perfectly. Belting sweaters can be tricky for me; in this case, the secret was to use a wider belt (I usually go with skinny ones). Don’t you just love a good outfit?!

My ONLY issue with this outfit – the skirt! I normally have great luck with Talbots clothes in general and ordered this wool pencil skirt on sale last month. Talbots has changed their design of wool pencil skirts for the worst – the skirt doesn’t have a lining and kept riding up all day. I hope my coworkers enjoyed the extra show of legs they got today.  Yikes.

outfit of the day: I did not immediately eat my burrito just for this post

J. Crew heart me sweater with a plaid blouse and mustard No. 2 pencil skirt

Blouse, J. Crew Factory • Skirt, J. Crew Factory (similar) • sweater, J. Crew (similar) • tights, J. Crew • flats, J. Crew Factory (similar) • lipstick, Revlon ‘Orange Flip’

Before we get to the outfit, I’d like to point out that I left my fresh Chipotle burrito in the house while I took these photos. It was almost painful not to eat it immediately. I am not a patient Chipotle eater. (Usually the chips disappear in the car on the way home.)

Anyway, this outfit. Pretty easy to put together, which was just what I needed for a Monday. I used the colors from the blouse as inspiration for the other pieces. I love this blouse, but it does the oh-so-annoying gaping problem that often happens to we girls with large girls. So irritating. My solution is to pair it with a cami or throw it under sweaters. Or if I was smart, I’d stop buying blouses that are slightly too small.

Remember: tomorrow is my first ever link-up of Whatever Works Wednesday! Come link up an outfit, DIY, or random blog post of yours – and find other blogs too!

outfit of the day: kind of nerdy

A long cardigan and polka dot J. Crew Blythe blouse with black jeans

Cardigan, Halogen via  Nordstrom • Blouse, J. Crew (very similar) • pants, Old Navy • loafers, Steve Madden

I had been doing really good this week on picking out outfits the night before – but this morning I just could not. Then after scouring my favorite Pinterest board, I had a flash of inspiration and my outfit was born. I actually really loved this look, but I just wish it could have come to be a tad earlier than 15 minutes before I had to be out the door.

This outfit feels a little nerdy to me – in a good way. I almost borrowed my boyfriend’s cool glasses for photos, even though they give me a headache when I wear them. I have always liked the look of blouses tucked into skinny pants, but never felt like I could pull it off – so this outfit is a little outside my wheelhouse. For some people it’s a crazy color. For me it’s a tucked-in blouse. I’m a total rebel.

And because it’s a nerd kind of post – what’s more nerdy than a gif?

outfit of the day: dots and stripes

J. Crew wrap sweater and striped skirt with Stitchfix blouse

It’s pattern mixing for Monday’s outfit! I’m envisioning an outfit repeat in the summer with just the blouse and skirt. I love how neutral this blouse is, and how well it works with just about anything!

Also – can we talk about a-line skirts? I’m obsessed with this shape, but there are SO few of them available! I’m partial to my beloved No. 2 skirts from J. Crew, but darn it, I wish there were more a-line skirts available. Anyone found good ones for spring?

outfit of the day: black and white

A white blouse with a black faux fur vest and black accessories

A white Gap blouse with a black faux fur vest and black accessories

Vest, Simply Vera Vera Wang for Kohl’s • blouse, Gap • pants, Old Navy • boots, Talbots • necklace, eBay • purse, Kate Spade

Black and white outfits are appearing all over the place for spring, and I have to be honest – this is not my favorite trend. I’m much more comfortable wearing seemingly clashing colors and bright neons than I am wearing black and white. It’s a combo that has always seemed so harsh in its juxtaposition to me. Still, there’s something almost palate-cleansing about an uncomplicated outfit.

I’ve seen a ton of spring pieces coming out lately, but don’t forget to stock up on the winter sales for your outfits next year. If you don’t already own a faux fur vest, I HIGHLY recommend one. I wore this one twice last week. It’s the perfect layer on a cold day, and adds elegance to any outfit. Watch stores for these pieces on sale – it’s worth buying!

outfit of the day: happy valentine’s day

Gap neon pink sweater with red pants

Sweater, Gap • pants, LOFT • shoes, J. Crew Factory • necklace, Kate Spade

Even though today is Valentine’s Day, I wore my super girly Valentines outfit yesterday for Galentine’s Day! I had a wonderful dinner out with my girlfriends, wore the brightest, pinkest sweater I own and even taught a few people in my office what Galentine’s Day means.

I love a good holiday, especially one as fun as Valentine’s Day. I know it’s become cliche and commercialized but really, what’s better than a holiday that includes flowers and chocolate and time with the people you love?

Speaking of love… oh yeah. I went there.

Love with a Gap pink sweater

Happy Valentine’s Day!
