I was at my favorite shopping area on Sanibel on vacation last year when I wandered into a store I normally wouldn’t go into. It was the patterns and colors that drew me in – almost everything was pink and green. The prices were too high, but then I spotted the sale rack – and found this dress that instantly takes me back to Florida and the beach. Lilly Pulitzer died last week, and I thought it only apt that I wear one of my favorite dresses in her memory. I’m going back to Sanibel this summer, and I can’t wait to return to that store and see if I can snag another Lilly piece for my closet.

Part two of making a summer dress work when it’s a little cooler: a cardigan. Points if it’s a longer one. I was going to go with a camel cardi – something more neutral for fall – but screw it. Bright colors are for all year long, and orange and lilac make me happy. And on a Tuesday, I need a happy outfit.

It is unseasonably warm here – seriously, 80 this week and we may get snow on Halloween. Thus is life in Indiana. I might as well enjoy it, because it’s back to tights this weekend.

The absolute easiest way to wear a summer dress in the fall: throw on a blazer. This week I plan on pulling my warm weather dresses out one last time (maybe?) and showing how you can stretch your summer wardrobe into the fall.

outfit of the day: hope in a dress

Back in May when I was visiting my family in Arizona, I went shopping with my aunt Karen – one of my favorite things to do with her. I bought the usual work clothes at J. Crew and then decided to try on dresses just in case. And that’s when I found a black halter dress that made me feel amazing and gave me hope for the future during a time when I wasn’t very hopeful. I buy clothes for a lot of reasons – necessity, they make me feel good, I love the color. But I’ve never bought a a dress because it gives me hope – until this one. I needed hopeful karma in a dress form, and it worked.

For months, the dress hung in my closet, all ready with no place to go. Then everything came together: the temperature soared (at least for us in early October), I had a date with a cute boy who makes me so happy and I knew exactly what I was going to wear.

It’s a wonderful thing to feel hopeful. This might be my favorite dress ever.

I can’t let go of my favorite summer dresses quite yet – and thankfully, I don’t have to! Layer with a blazer or cardi and add some boots, and a new favorite fall outfit is born!

Can I just say how much I love J. Crew’s schoolboy blazers? Ok, I know they’re expensive. Especially the one I’m wearing. But if you can find them on sale (and there are a few – like this one!), it’s worth it. The cut is flattering, the material is luxurious and seriously, you will get so much use out of a good blazer. I’m torn between asking for the gray or the camel one for Christmas. If you’re looking to invest in a good blazer, I highly recommend this one!

I got called a bumblebee today – which I am fine with. I was quick to point out that there are a few blue stripes in my dress, automatically negating any bee likeness.

Today’s dress was a gift that I was so excited to receive from a friend. The colors remind me of a watercolor painting, and I couldn’t wait to pair it with my favorite blazer.

I may have had a little too much fun with today’s outfit. But really – can you ever have too much fun dressed as (my version of) a 1960s glamour girl?

I was lucky enough to be sent this dress and knew I had to immediately style it with a high bun and some chunky bangles. The photos don’t do the pattern in the fabric justice – it’s so beautiful! And did I mention it has pockets? Seriously, a dress with pockets is an instant win.


Yeah. Like I said, I got super goofy had fun with these photos.

Adrianna Pappell is one of my favorite brands I always look for at Nordstrom, and I was lucky enough to be send this fabulous dress. The color is perfect for summer, and the fabric is a cross between silk and jersey – it kept me cool all day! Definitely a new favorite for summer.

I have been waiting to recreate this look for over a year. I wore black with my pink blazer last time, and I think I like white much better. Oh I love this blazer so much I could dance. (Don’t worry; I won’t.)
