outfit of the day: keep it simple

Oh what a glorious weekend. Yesterday was Memorial Day in the U.S., which meant no work and jeans. Even though it wasn’t quite as warm as I’d have liked it (my poor legs need some sun!), I still had a wonderful weekend with family and friends. Memorial Day feels like the kickoff to summer, and I can’t wait for the fun I have planned in the coming months. I found this hat on sale last July and have barely worn it – and I’m not going to let that happen this year! Weekends are all about being comfortable – after stressing myself out over what to wear to a family luncheon, I realized it shouldn’t matter. These may not be my prettiest sandals, but they’re darn functional and comfy. Sometimes an outfit is just an outfit, and I don’t need to be making a statement with everything I wear.

Unless that statement happens to be, “I love this hat.” Because I do.

Meghan of Whatsername Jewelry

It’s time to introduce my third sponsor, Meghan of Whatsername Jewelry! Meghan’s shop is full of stamped and personalized jewelry and other pieces – you’ll have trouble picking out just one! Meghan has a GREAT giveaway coming later this week – stay tuned!

Name: Meghan Haskell
Where you live: Providence, Rhode Island
Favorite foods: That’s a toughie.  I love to eat and my tastes change often.  Sometimes I go for weeks eating lots of Honey Wheat Pretzels then I stop eating them completely and go for Doritos or Baked Cheetos.  I also love ice cream, chocolate chip cookie dough or cookies and cream.  Oh my gosh, I ‘m getting hungry.
What would you do with a free afternoon: Since having my daughter, my afternoons, and mornings, have been focused on her, so if I had a free afternoon, I would work.  I would head to a coffee shop, surf the net and read my favorite blogs, definitely yours, and write a post or two.  Then I would come home, give my little girl a kiss, and make a few pieces of jewelry for my shop.
Current nail polish: None because my hands are constantly near Kira’s mouth and I just feel safer without it on, but if I had to choose a color for this time of year for my nails, I’d say pink.  A nice light bubble gum pink.
Favorite music on your iPod: Baby Einstein…it’s funny, I now have children’s tunes like The Itsy Bitsy Spider stuck in my head but I really like Jay-Z to help me stay upbeat and motivated and  there is nothing like some Fergie and Black Eyed Peas to get me dancing with my daughter in the kitchen.
Thank you so much Meghan for sponsoring me! Don’t forget to visit Meghan at her Etsy shop, blog, Facebook and Twitter!

outfit of the day: fashion should be fun

J. Crew schoolboy blazer and No. 2 pencil skirt with a leopard fedora

Blazer, J. Crew (I had to size up) • top, from my mom • skirt, J. Crew (similar) • belt, J. Crew Factory • tights, Target • heels, Target • hat, Albertus Swanepoel for Target • lipstick, NARS Schiap

I never get so many stares as I do when I’m wearing my leopard fedora. I guess southern Indiana isn’t used to funky hats – and that’s fine with me, because I also never smile so much as when I’m wearing this hat! I bought it at Target last year, and always feel great about myself when I wear it. Sadly, I’ve neglected it all winter – I really need to wear it more often. One of my favorite things about fashion is how fun it can be to experiment with your personal style and try something new. If it makes you smile, go for it!

outfit of the day: la fille française

This outfit felt very French to me. Maybe it was the black and white stripes paired with the red beret. I actually got this beret in Paris, and I love it. Yes, I was that American tourist walking around wearing a beret in Paris.

Sweater, Old Navy
Pants, Gap

Shoes, Target
Necklace, Talbots
Beret, streets of Paris

Boyfriend
Photographer wasn’t following orders going along with my very kindly-put suggestions.

French-speaking readers, this post’s title does actually mean “the French girl,” right? Google Translation, don’t let me down!

outfit of the day: colonel mustard’s pants

I bought these pants over the weekend. The color struck me as oddly neutral – different than the typical brown or taupe, but still the perfect fall color to wear with everything.

Sweater, Gap
Pants, J. Crew

Jacket, Talbots
Cami, Banana Republic
Shoes, Talbots
Hat, Target
Sunglasses, Target

Hats are back in. I’ve decreed this. If only.

Ah yes, I am a mysterious woman. Who needs to put her hose away for the winter.

tutorial: how to organize winter accessories

I had to scrape my windshield for the first time last week. That’s a sad reality check that it’s getting colder and colder. I don’t mind the winter, though, in part to my fabulous scarf collection.

Don’t judge. Most of these are thanks to street vendors in New York, London and Paris. Best scarves ever, I swear. Plus Travis’s stuff accounts for 10% 5% of this.

But how to organize this mess of stuff? Personally I prefer to see everything at the same time and arrange by color. You can easily organize your winter gear too – all you need is an accordian-like shoe organizer.

I bought mine at Target. I like it because the separators are fabric, while the sides are clear, allowing me to see the different colors.

1. Organize all accessories by type: hat, gloves/mittens, scarves, etc.

2. Organize by color. This will help in the morning when you’re dashing out the door and need a matching scarf quickly.

3. Fold, then roll. Scarves will turn into long tubes. This allows more scarves per cube, and also keeps the wrinkles down. (And yes, Othello photo-bombed the second photo.)

4. Start with hats and gloves at the top.

5. Slide scarves in according to color.

Voila! An organized, efficient way to manage all those winter pieces that keep us warm and cute, no matter the weather.

outfit of the day: i wore a hat. all of indiana stared.

My new hat is one of the funnest things I’ve bought in a while, and I couldn’t wait to wear it to work. Style should be fun, especially on a Monday. I was literally singing going into work today wearing my hat.

Coat, Talbots

Sweater, Old Navy
Cami, Banana Republic
Pants, Gap
Shoes, Nine West Outlet
Hat, Albertus Swanepoel for Target

I totally felt like a spy yesterday. I have always wanted to be a spy, ever since I fell in love with Harriet and her nosy ways. My friend Megan and I actually climbed trees and spied on the neighbors, and then wrote down everything we saw in notebooks. You know, normal kid behavior.

God, I still love the hat. Like LOVE it. But here’s a hint: when you wear something even slightly out of the ordinary in a small town, be prepared for stares. I may have slightly exaggerated the title, but it sure felt like that yesterday. Do not acknowledge these people who refuse to dream outside the fashion box. Simply pity them and hold your head higher. Ginormous sunglasses optional, though they totally add to the whole spy look. I did feel like I was undercover for some secret mission.

Fashion should be fun. Screw what other people think. Wear things that make you happy.

Also, I feel I am duty-bound to point this out: the hat on the left is from J. Crew. The one on the right is mine from Target. Both are from collections by Albertus Swanepoel. The difference in price? $158.

Disclaimer: I normally post outfits on the days I actually wear them; however, this is yesterday’s outfit.

weekend wishlist: cords, hat, lipstick, nail polish

1. J. Crew vintage matchstick cords in “vibrant flame”, $79.50
2. Albertus Swanepoel for Target hat, $19.99
3. Laura Mercier creme lipstick in “rose”, $22
4. Nicole for OPI nail polish in “No Limits”, $7.99

i have no idea where i’ll wear this hat, but i don’t care

I was at a local boutique buying a present from my mom when I saw it – tucked into a display cube, the wispy feathers barely visible. I nearly shook with shoppers’ delight when I realized what it was – a hat. A mother-effing gorgeous ivory hat topped with feathers and a flower. A hat that would look totally in place at a British country wedding.

My sister-in-law laughed, shook her head and looked at me like I was crazy. The exact words from my boyfriend were, “What the hell are you wearing?” But I don’t care.

i need an event. now.

I love this hat.

ooh la la

I am determined to bring hats back – if only so I get to wear this one sooner rather than later. Hats are equally feminine and slightly over-the-top, and yes, there is a part of me that feels like Kate Middleton the Duchess of Cambridge when I wear this hat. Which only makes it more appealing.

Now – can someone have a garden wedding immediately?

Othello saw that Horatio had his picture taken and was instantly seething with jealously. I was practically coerced into posting this, I swear.
